Understanding Minnesota Law
Minnesota’s abortion laws have shifted the public conversation around pregnancy care, and pregnancy centers are directly affected by that shift. Today, abortion is legal at all stages of pregnancy in Minnesota and is protected by both statute and constitutional interpretation. In 2023, the Legislature passed the Protect Reproductive Options Act, limiting the ability of state or local governments to impose additional restrictions.
While this law defines abortion access, it has also intensified scrutiny of pregnancy centers. In recent years, pregnancy centers have been increasingly discussed not as community healthcare and support providers, but as political actors. This framing has fueled confusion about what pregnancy centers actually do and why they exist.
Actions at the state level have reinforced that confusion:
- Minnesota removed all state funding for pregnancy centers from the budget in 2023.
- The Attorney General’s Office issued a consumer alert that raised concerns about pregnancy centers’ intentions and practices.
- Abortion advocacy groups have openly called for pregnancy centers to close and continue to conduct smear campaigns.
These actions, taken together, have eroded public trust, created uncertainty, and made it more challenging for you to reach women seeking help.
A Unified Voice Is Essential
PCCMN exists because Minnesota’s pregnancy centers are stronger together. When each center or clinic is left to defend itself, misinformation spreads more easily, and centers lose precious time that could have been spent serving the clients who need them. When we speak together, our words carry more weight, and we can influence culture and defend against new laws meant to silence us.
In Minnesota’s current pro-abortion climate, women need pregnancy centers that can offer real help and hope more than ever. Pregnancy centers must stay open to provide pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, education, material assistance, and compassionate support, services that remain legal, ethical, and necessary. PCCMN educates policymakers, supporters, and communities so pregnancy centers are understood for what they do, not what others falsely claim they are.
In a state where abortion access is protected by law, pregnancy centers must also be protected by truth. PCCMN ensures this by monitoring policy, responding to misinformation, and advocating for the accurate representation of pregnancy centers and clinics across Minnesota.
